The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) influences policy, mobilizes communities, and strengthens programs and organizations to improve the health of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) populations. Position Summary: The Development Director is responsible for the development, design, and implementation of a comprehensive fund development program, including supporting the Board of Directors, executive staff including the President & CEO, and Branches and programs in meetings revenue and cultivation goals. This includes revenues from government, corporate, foundation and major donor sources. While only supervising one staff person directly, the Director series employees are expected to lead cross-organizational teams to achieve their goals and to assure the resources and technical knowledge for Board and staff to fulfill their responsibilities. While primarily focused on revenue-generation for sources which fund across the entire organization especially private sources, this position will also be a part of each grant proposal development management team, as well as with the F&A team which manages the re-granting functions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Fund Development Strategy and Program:
• Develop the strategy and plan for all fund development targets and functions for a national organization with an $8+ million dollar annual budget
• Implement both the strategy as well as the operational fund development plan, overseeing staff and coordinating with cross-organizational teams.
• Create and achieve financial targets for individual, major, corporate, and institutional fundraising opportunities
• Support annual fundraising drives, especially those conducted by the Board of Directors, including the development of solicitation materials, donor prospect research, and cultivating prospects.
• Work with staff and volunteers on fundraising
• Identify major donor prospects for unrestricted funding and manage the implementation of solicitation strategies, including creating individual donor materials and letters
• Represent the agency to external bodies and interests as required for fund development promotion. This includes travel across the nation.
• Plan special fundraising events both locally and nationally
• Lead, coordinate, and support the efforts of leadership to raise $200,000 in unrestricted funds per year and a total of $1 million per year in program funds.
• Work with board, directors and other key staff to develop funding strategies, grant proposals and prepare narrative and financial reports
Systems and Infrastructure Development:
• Design a strategic fund development system and recommend donor database and other infrastructural resources needed for a strong development program. Implement these systems, assuring that all inter-connections with other teams and Branches have complete and timely information to those who need it and into existing data systems that require the information (F&A, program directors and managers, Board, etc.)
• Assure maintenance of donor database; produce reports for executive team or board of directors on a regular basis to track progress and performance on designed campaigns and activities.
• Assure that the donor acknowledgement and recognition system meets the needs of donors in timeliness, responsiveness, and as donor interests and needs change.
• Keeps abreast with innovations, changes, and developments in the field of fund development and philanthropy and recommends and implements adaptations and changes to keep the APIAHF system current and effective.
• For each grant proposal, there is an F&A lead and a program lead. For proposals which are generated out of program Branches, the Director or Manager will lead the content development, while F&A will be responsible for leading the administrative portions and processes for submitting the proposals.
• Works as a senior member of each grant proposal development team, assuring that the processes and procedures run as smoothly as possible.
• For those proposals and funding opportunities which cut across the entire organization, the Development Director will be the senior staff responsible for both the process and content of those requests, working closely with the Executive Staff Team, as well as with other staff who are assigned.
• Assure regular scanning and prospecting for grant opportunities, including federal, private foundations, corporate, and other sources. Triggers the decision to apply and leads the initial organizing of the proposal development team with the appropriate senior staff.
Management of Grants Secured
• Working with F&A and program staff, create schedule of deliverables and measure progress for all grants.
• Maintain grants and reporting calendars, including anticipated response dates for submitted proposals and likelihood of award
• Maintain accurate government, foundation, corporate information in grants management database
• Maintain accurate and complete electronic and hard copies of grant files
• Coordinate and participate in reporting to funders
Re-granting of funds to other organizations:
• Working with F&A and program leadership, develop and disseminate requests for proposals for APIAHF grants to sub-grantees.
• Support the processing of proposals and the decision making processes
• Manage the files, correspondence and grant award letters
• Assuring receipt, filing, and review of reports from grantees
• Close-out activities for grants, including processing any approvals or final sign-offs
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree or nine years of work experience with fundraising, fund development and/or grants reporting
• Minimum of three years’ experience in any of the following areas fundraising in either corporate or foundation giving, large individual grassroots and major donor solicitation
• One or more of the following: demonstrated ability to fundraise unrestricted funds; ability to cultivate relationships with major donors of various communities and with both community funds and major foundations
Skills, knowledge and abilities:
• Demonstrated fundraising ability
• Experience with grants management
• Excellent attention to detail
• Able to work in a cross team fashion – strong interpersonal and coordination skills are critical
• Ability to handle multiple projects at one time
• Demonstrated knowledge of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and/or Pacific Island communities
• Familiarity with contact and database management systems
• Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
• Must be comfortable with public speaking and meeting facilitation
• Experience interacting with community, government, civic, business leaders, media and community based organizations
• Strong organizational skills and self-motivated
• Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and excellent judgment, confidentiality and discretion
• Able to travel
• Master’s degree or eleven years of experience with non-profits and fundraising
• Strongly preferred: significant major donor fundraising experience having raised $500,000 from a strong donor program, not just events, raising increasingly more funds each year over time. Initial goal of $150,000 unrestricted gifts and a growth projection to $300,000 in 3 years.
