Lead Teacher - YELLS Afterschool Program


The YELLS Afterschool Program is sponsored by Youth Empowerment through Learning, Leading, and Serving, Inc. We provide a safe haven for youth in the students’ own Franklin Road neighborhood, while empowering them with the skills, resources, and character they need to serve as effective leaders and members of their community.

The role of the Lead Teacher is to ensure all YELLS youth receive the support and instruction needed to excel in school and in life. The Lead Teacher will deliver dynamic and engaging reading, language arts, and math lessons, as well as provide individual and group tutoring to youth in grades K-5.

Job Responsibilities
• Develop and teach interactive and engaging academic enrichment lesson plans tailored to students’ school-day curriculum and areas of weakness. Lessons should be taught “after-school style,” with plenty of physical movement, authentic experiences, and lots of fun!
• Incorporate Service Learning and community engagement activities into reading, language arts, and math lessons
• Design and implement diagnostic tools to assess and track student performance
• Analyze data to set and measure both programmatic goals and individual student goals
• Design interventions and lessons to address identified areas of need for students
• Direct staff and volunteers in providing academic instruction and tutoring to youth
• Coach other staff to collaborate in designing activities that complement each other to best deliver a holistic and effective curriculum that promotes the values of YELLS and accelerates student learning
• Develop a rapport with students and an awareness of their academic, social, and home lives
• Create a fluid connection between home, school, community, and YELLS
• Confer with parents, Executive Director, or school when necessary in positive, constructive ways regarding the behavior, health, and general development of youth
• Promote an environment that welcomes and empowers all youth and staff
• Identify and connect with local resources and partners to enhance program delivery and coordination
• Supervise children attending the program, and promote safety and respect amongst all participants while maintaining order and discipline
• Participate as part of a team to run a top-of-the-line Youth Center with quality programs by helping out where needed or instructed

Qualifications
• Enthusiastic, dynamic personality that inspires and motivates children
• Must hold or be eligible to hold a Georgia professional teaching certificate (Early Childhood P-5)
• Experience within the educational system as a lead classroom teacher
• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Services, or related field required; Master’s Degree preferred
• Wealth of knowledge in best practices for teaching reading, writing, and mathematics
• Bilingual – fluent in both English and Spanish – a plus
• Effective behavior management skills

Hours: Part-time, 3:30 – 7:00 Monday through Friday, plus planning time – totaling 18-20 hours each week

Compensation Range: $22-25/hour based on qualifications
