Become an Environment America fellow
If you're looking for the opportunity to organize, advocate and fight for the environment, apply to be an Environment America fellow today. Specifically, we’re looking for a California Federal Field Organizer to start in Los Angeles in August 2013.
Work to build support for the environment across the California
As part of a team of field organizers working in key states across the country, Environment America’s California Federal Field Organizer builds the public and political support we need to advance our national environmental agenda in communities across California. When powerful industries and their political allies stand in the way of environmental progress, we need media attention, the support of broad-based coalitions, an informed public, and grassroots action to counter their power and influence and win the day for our environment. Our California Federal Field Organizer will organize news events, bring community leaders and other constituencies together, and organize town hall meetings, rallies and other grassroots actions to show support for our national issues, including:
• Wind Power for America: American wind energy is a true environmental and economic success story – and nowhere is that clearer than in California. Wind energy now powers the equivalent of nearly 13 million homes across the country, reducing our dependence on coal and oil and creating a cleaner, healthier future. But powerful polluting interests like the coal and oil industries are lobbying against the incentives the wind industry needs to continue seeing success. We’re working to build and mobilize public support across California in favor of our state’s Congressional going to bat to protect the wind industry.
• Protect America’s Waters: Shortsighted legal decisions have left thousands of acres of wetlands across the California, and more than half of the nation’s streams, vulnerable to pollution and development. Now, polluters’ allies in Congress are trying to block President Obama from ever restoring protections to America’s waters. We’re working to show massive public support for crucial clean water protections. So far, we've delivered more than 100,000 public comments in support of clean water, but if we’re going to push past powerful polluters, we’re going to need to do mobilize everyone who cares about America’s waterways – from California to the Great Plains to New England.
• Clean Air, Healthy Families: Air pollution from power plants and other stationary sources cuts short the lives of hundreds of Californians each year, and leads to more asthma attacks, heart attacks and developmental disorders. These same dirty and aging facilities are responsible for much of the carbon pollution that fuels global warming. We’re urging the Administration to set meaningful limits on from power plants - and we’ve started to see some real progress. But polluters and their allies in Congress are mounting powerful attacks to block or weaken new pollution limits. We’re building the public support to defend against these attacks.
The California Federal Field Organizer will tackle critical campaigns like these while building our political power across the region.
Environment America works to advance the environmental vision and values we share—clean energy, clean water, wilderness and wildlife protection, healthy food and sustainable agriculture, and more. With nearly 100 professional staff, more than 1 million members, activists and allies, and affiliates in 29 states, we organize the support it takes to stand up to polluting industries and ultimately sweep past them.
The results of our work include more solar and wind power in California and 21 other states, protecting Yosemite against the threat of toxic mining, and clean car standards that mean that Californians will breathe easier.
But let’s not kid ourselves: we are living through an environmental crisis. Temperatures are rising, polar pack ice is melting, catastrophic fires are burning, and pollution has created dead zones in the oceans. Each day, another development, another big-box store, another drilling rig, another mining operation crowds out a little more wilderness.
Fighting for the environment is the challenge of a lifetime. You need to start somewhere. But where?
