Bilingual Community Outreach Advocate


The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Our Legal Department focuses on cases involving the rights of children, prisoners, immigrants, the LGBT community, victims of hate crimes, and issues affecting economically disadvantaged communities. This position will focus principally on our immigrant children’s project, but may support casework and advocacy in all areas of the Center’s legal agenda.

The Community Outreach Advocate will use public policy advocacy and community outreach to further the Center’s juvenile justice and education reform work. He/she will also assist in client and community outreach and support for other Center cases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet Center needs:
• Mobilize and support community partners and families of children to advocate for juvenile justice and education policy change
• Mobilize and support community partners to advocate for reforms to consumer lending practices
• Research and write informational materials
• Work with education experts and school personnel to bring about school discipline reform
• Facilitate and present “Know Your Rights” trainings on topics of concern
• Investigate and document youth and family complaints/experiences in schools and the juvenile/criminal justice systems
• Investigate and document complaints regarding discriminatory and abusive practices against poor people
• Field complaints and conduct case development
• Provide support on Center cases

Qualifications/Requirements:
• College degree
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Strong leadership skills
• Experience with community organizing, outreach, or mobilization
• Ability to work with a diverse group of people
• Computer knowledge
• Position requires travel and work on evenings and weekends

Ability to speak Spanish is required. Significant previous community organizing and community mobilization experience highly desired.
This position will be based in our central office in Montgomery, Alabama.
