Summary/Scope Statement:

As the lead executive of PAWS Humane, the Executive Director (ED) will manage all staff and operations, and liaise with the Board of Directors. Advocate for the vision of the organization with a long-term strategic plan and annual objectives that are approved by the Board of Directors. Serve as the executive point-of-contact for area partners and major donors.

Qualifications:

• Deep commitment to animal welfare
o Knowledge of animal welfare and shelter operations best practices (preferred)
o Shelter experience (as employee or active volunteer)
o Passion for animals and demonstrated ability to work on their behalf
• Previous leadership/management experience (non-profit and/or for-profit setting)
o Ability to develop strategic alignment and partnership with Board of Directors
o Visionary leadership
o Strong financial acumen and stewardship
o Commitment to professional develop for yourself and staff
• Experience in fundraising and development/public relations
o Donor engagement with major gift solicitation, stewardship and corporate outreach
o Experience cultivating community partnerships
• Strong communication skills for a wide diversity of settings and audiences

Education:
Minimum B.A. or B.S. degree in applicable area of study

Duties and Responsibilities:
General
• Commitment to the Mission of PAWS Humane
• Follow the highest ethical standards to ensure accountability and compliance with all operational policies (animal welfare, financial, and human resources)
• Ensure the quality and effectiveness of shelter programs and special events

Budget and Finance
• Ensure the organization adheres to high standards in accounting and finance for budgeting, accounting, reporting, audits and financial planning
o Prepare the annual budget for Board review and approval (including revisions)
o Adequately and properly inform the Board of the organization’s fiscal health on a monthly basis
o Manage fund development
o Maintain accurate, organized and official records and document
• Oversee and manage capital campaign and future endowment development
• Establish, implement, and manage successful fundraising efforts.

Board Relations
• Engage the Board of Directors in strategic planning and lead implementation to establish measurable goals for each fiscal year
• Support the Board to make decisions in the best interest of the organization and the community
• Report to the Board monthly on key performance metrics and ensure positive Board/Staff relationships are maintained.

Human Resources
• Oversee the recruitment, employment, management and release of all staff
• Ensure job descriptions are developed, regular performance evaluations are conducted, motivation systems are utilized and sound human resource practices are in place that abide by local, state and federal law
• Encourage and maintain continuous professional development for all staff members, including the ED
• Develop future leadership to ensure sustainability of the organization

Community Relations
• Serve as the public face of the organization – manage public and media relations, public speaking engagements, written communications
• Work alongside other rescues to achieve a coalition within the community

Review:
The Board will perform an annual performance review for the ED based on the current job description and established goals and metrics. The Board will work with the ED to support his/her professional development goals and to address any areas identified in the review that require the ED’s attention.
