Job Descriptiontop

Director of Development (Fundraiser 5), L&S College Relations
UC Berkeley - Main Campus

UC Berkeley is consistently ranked as the best public university in the world, and it places strongly in the top five institutions internationally, public or private.  Berkeley's largest college, and one of the most prestigious academic units in the UC system, is the College of Letters & Science.  L&S currently seeks a  Director of Development to join its team of fundraising professionals.  The individual chosen will be a leader of proven accomplishment, high energy, and resilient imagination who will spearhead the College's development efforts relating to the Biological Sciences.

Last year, the College raised a record amount of private donations, totaling nearly $60 million.  We are seeking a dynamic individual to help us sustain and surpass this level of excellence and accomplishment.  A proven track record is essential, as is a willingness to work collaboratively with Berkeley faculty, with colleagues across the campus, and particularly with an energetic and ambitious academic dean.  Candidates must bring a history of building strong relationships with donors and an instinct to go the extra mile to engage new donors and to help existing supporters deepen their relationship with the College in ways that are meaningful and motivating.

This is a complex position that will provide unparalleled opportunities for growth.  Berkeley is currently in the final phase of a $3 billion capital campaign, with approximately $2.6 billion committed.  The College of Letters & Science has been an integral part of this success, with well over $400 million of new funding secured during the campaign for the College and the myriad of research programs led by its faculty.  The new Development Director will be part of a team that defines new opportunities through the end of the campaign and well beyond for alumni, parents and other friends to help Berkeley sustain academic excellence in an era when philanthropy will be integral to our success. This is an opportunity to join a solid, successful, forward-thinking fundraising effort in one of the most rewarding intellectual environments in the world.  We welcome applications from candidates who want to help us define the new era of greatness in public higher education.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage a portfolio of 125-150 major gift prospects, the bulk of whom have the capacity to give $100,000 to $250,000 or more to the campus
  • Raise at least $2 million per year from a portfolio of qualified donors, producing results that impact overall team goals
  • Collaborate with academic Dean to develop long- and short-term strategies in support of the College’s and Divisional mission and goals
  • Design and implement successful solicitation strategies; creating and evaluating methods for cultivating relationships with major donors, corporations or foundations for the purpose of obtaining gifts directly or in conjunction with senior college officials and faculty.
  • Manage relationships with some of the University’s most high profile and/or sensitive donors through the development of individualized marketing plans and strategies (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).
  • Design and implement highly specialized program activities.
  • Collaborate with members of the College Relations team on other activities (such as events, gift recognition and reporting, etc.) that support the College’s major gift activities
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other campus units to advance coordinated strategies for multi-interest donors and prospects
  • Serve as a development professional in the Biological Sciences division, collaborating with the Dean and members of the College Relations team to convey that knowledge

Qualifications:
  • 8-10 years of demonstrated successful major-gift fundraising experience and non-profit campaigns; ability to develop and structure complex gifts
  • High level experience in building prospect portfolios; expert knowledge of how to research, identify, and cultivate new donor prospects
  • Demonstrated success in relationship-building with prospects, key faculty and staff.
  • Expert communication, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills; keen attention to detail and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Expertise in developing persuasive written materials from diverse, unstructured written and oral information
  • Understanding of, enthusiasm for, and experience in a team approach to fundraising
  • Must thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment while effectively executing a challenging set of major gift plans and programs
  • Advanced degree in Science
  • Some evening and weekend hours, as well as occasional travel required
  • Knowledge of fundraising in an academic setting as well as familiarity with scientific or technical fields is a plus (preferred).

Salary: Annual Hiring Range: $80,100 - $157,800 depending upon experience and demonstrated fundraising success at a major university. For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University visit:
