About KIPP Bay Area Schools
In the San Francisco Bay Area, five KIPP middle schools and two KIPP high schools are closing the achievement gap between low-income students and their more advantaged peers. These tuition-free, college-preparatory schools are located in the under-served neighborhoods of Bayview Hunters Point and the Western Addition in San Francisco, East San Jose, San Lorenzo, and West Oakland. KIPP (The Knowledge is Power Program) began in 1994 in Houston, Texas. Today, there are 125 KIPP schools in 20 states and Washington, D.C. serving more than 39,000 students. KIPP Bay Area Schools currently serves 2,600 students through its seven schools, with a total of 225 employees and annual budget of $25 million.
The Development Manager for Major Gifts plays a critical role in a growing department. This position is focused on managing and prioritizing the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of our most critical donors. S/he will facilitate research and moves management of our major donors that will enable the Board, Development Committee, and Executive Director to deepen relationships with prospective donors and a strong base of support for KIPP Bay Area Schools.
The Development Manager for Major Gifts will oversee our database and reporting to accurately reflect moves management; report out quarterly on our activity using a dashboard; and use these resources to identify and execute critical cultivation and stewardship opportunities. This person will work closely with our Director of Development and the Development Associate to help build the internal tracking systems that monitor, measure, and can report out accurately and in a timely manner on all of our work with donors. This role will also require excellent communication and relationship management skills, meticulous attention to detail, a commitment to accuracy, and strong project management skills.
This position will be located at our Regional Support Office (RSO) in Oakland and report to our Director of Development.
Roles and Responsibilities include:
Solicitation preparation and follow-up
• Prepare solicitors for major gift prospect meetings, including research and appropriate materials.
• Coordinates preparation of proposals and other required materials for major donors, as follow-up to meetings.
Moves management (Cultivation, Solicitation, and Stewardship)
• Support Development Committee, board, and staff in building relationships with major donors and prospects.
• Develop segmented stewardship strategy which takes advantage of general and customized touches to ensure a positive donor experience.
• Enable board and staff to communicate and appreciate our donors effectively, including student letters, thank-you letters, other forms of donor recognition.
• Spearhead individual donor follow-up after strategic development and donor events.
• Engage Board of Directors in appeal process to create personalized appeals; supervise the Development Associate to deliver appeal letters that are compelling, timely, and aligned with our messaging
• Produce accurate research and profiles on major donors and prospects, and ensure information is logged in Salesforce database.
• Partner with the Director of Development to identify strategic funding opportunities, as part of the research process. This will include competitive public funding, foundation, and individual major gifts.
• Build process for tracking donor activity; analyze this data strategically to identify customized next steps and follow-up activity
• Supervise Development Associate to produce detailed and accurate giving and prospect reports as needed, including bi-weekly donor updates to the Board and preparing for Committee meetings
Skills & Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree
• 5 or more years of development-related experience
• Strong communications and excellent writing ability
• Ability to build, develop, and retain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Works well in a team-oriented culture
• Strong interpersonal skills and desire to provide a high level of service and support
• Exhibits a polished, professional demeanor
• Experience working with Salesforce or other donor management databases preferred
• Self-starter with ability to prioritize among competing goals and initiate process improvements
• Strong achievement orientation with exceptional time management skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task
• Flexibility and willingness to contribute when needed
