The San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP) is a faith-based community organization working with 70,000 families in the region to address the needs of our families and our communities. During its 33-year history, the organization has created long-lasting, systemic change in issues such as health care, housing, public safety, neighborhood improvements, and education.
Job Description of an SDOP organizer:
Train congregation and community members in the principles and concepts of grassroots congregation-based community organizing.
Work with clergy and faith leaders to support the development of their congregations in the area of social justice and civic leadership, and engage them in SDOP.
Conduct one-to-one visits with grassroots community members on a consistent and regular basis.
Develop a broad base of relationships in neighborhoods and cities in faith institutions, neighborhoods, local government agencies, etc that develop new leadership and policy development work for SDOP.
Moves grassroots leadership from relationship building, education, and policy development to building power.
Develop analyses of power, politics, and faith institutions that moves grassroots leadership theory into local, state, and national policy development.
Contribute to a dynamic, flexible team of organizers who coordinate local activities to create community initiatives on pressing issues.
Conduct outreach, research, and strategic planning to move communities to social action and public forums
Work on local and regional campaigns for healthcare, housing, education, youth activities and violence prevention
Plan and coordinate large public forums and meetings.
Participate in local and national staff development sessions
Participate in fundraising and administrative activities as required
Baccalaureate degree or equivalent work experience. Post-graduate degree desired, but not required.
Ability to work with diverse religious congregations and racial/ethnic communities
Assist grassroots leaders to understand, grow, and move power
Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal relationship, public speaking, and writing skills.
Excellent strategic thinking skills.
Ability to analyze policies and institutions.
Experienced with and sensitivity to multi-cultural work environments.
Willing to work as member of and contribute to a staff team in a dynamic, learning environment.
Previous organizing experience and/or social justice experience highly desirable.
Spanish language proficiency or fluency preferred
Demonstrated computer proficiency required.
Candidates must successfully complete a one-to-one interview process with volunteer leaders, clergy, and SDOP staff
Full-time position - competitive starting salary dependent upon prior experience. Compensation package includes full health, dental, and retirement benefits.
