POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the foundation’s relationships with individual donors. This position will actively research, solicit and steward gifts from major gift prospects, private family foundations and corporations.
This position is responsible for engaging current and prospective major donors in the work of Saint Joseph’s Health System. The Sr. Development Officer works with Board members, donors, volunteers, and staff to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major and planned gifts at the level of $10,000 and above. This position also manages the recognition and stewardship of donors who play a critical role in the success of this position.
The Sr. Development Officer sets goals, monitors work and evaluates results to ensure that departmental and operating requirements are met and are in line with the needs and mission of Saint Joseph’s Health System.
The position works directly with the Foundation President and staff to set Major Gifts/Planned Giving policies and priorities. Considers and analyzes the implications of proposed actions and decisions on the organization. Works with the President and staff to develop policies and procedures for the raising, processing and acknowledging of major and planned gifts.
Complies with Health System and Foundation policies and procedures and supports the Mercy philosophy.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Communications or equivalent. Knowledge of “The Raiser’s Edge” software preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of seven years of proven development or sales leadership, including major and planned gift results. Healthcare philanthropy experience preferred. Demonstrated results in managing prospect management methodology – including key elements of donor cultivation and development cycle. Planned giving knowledge a plus. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and/or Fellow of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy (FAHP) preferred but not required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Demonstrated results in goal establishment and measuring results individually and as a team. Demonstrated capacity in understanding various programs, their application and their relevance to overall major gifts culture. Outstanding communication and relationship skills. Strong management skills. Passion for the poor, disenfranchised and underserved with ability to represent the Mercy Foundation in a credible, effective manner among friends of Mercy Care, Board members, volunteers, individuals, corporations and private family foundations.
