SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION’s Benefits Office, is seeking a

Benefits Accountant II



This position is responsible for preparing bank reconciliations, performing payroll function, general ledger reconciliation, maintenance and analysis and fixed asset record keeping for the SEIU Benefit Funds. The SEIU Benefits Funds administer multiple benefit funds in a fast paced environment.

Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:


Prepares bank reconciliations.
Prepares general ledger journal entries, reconciliation and analysis.
Maintains fixed asset records and depreciation schedules in compliance with capitalization policy and accounting principles.
Processes and monitors withdrawal liability estimates, assessments and collection.
Works with governmental agencies on ongoing basis to resolve issues.
Processes cash disbursements and cash receipts in compliance with Fund rules.
Prepares monthly and annual pension benefit reconciliation.
Processes wire transfers and withholding remittances as assigned.
Assists with implementation of software.
Assists Senior Benefits Accountant in general ledger account maintenance under management’s direction.
Performs payroll function and related administration.
Prepares reports for the trustee meetings.
Works with financial institutions on an ongoing basis to resolve issues.
Assists with the implementation of suggested changes made by the external auditor.
Assists Benefits Financial Manager with operation of a full-scale accounting department.
Assists Executive Director, Deputy Director, and Benefits Financial Manager with special projects as assigned.
Prepares filings as assigned.
Prepares work papers for external audit as assigned.
Assists Benefits Senior Accountant with preparation of administrative expense budgeting process under management’s direction.
Performs other duties as required to support the mission of the department and the SEIU Benefit Funds.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with course work in accounting and four (4) years experience in an accounting or financial environment.

Equivalency
Associates degree with course work in accounting and six (6) years of work experience in an accounting or financial environment.

Thorough knowledge of cash basis and accrual basis accounting systems.
Knowledge of current accounting practices and principles.
Knowledge of governmental compliance and filings.
Knowledge of budgeting principles.
Ability to analyze financial conditions and apply them to the planning process.
Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems independently.
Knowledge of financial statement preparation and general ledger maintenance.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to think critically and produce sound, logical conclusions.
Ability to handle multiple projects, meet established deadlines and adapt to an ever changing environment for the purpose of accomplishing results.
Ability to organize work/tasks to provide for systematic and efficient processes.
Ability to produce work accurately and thoroughly.
Ability to maintain flexible attitude and approach toward assignments while actively participating and supporting a team environment.
Proficient in the use of personal computers using accounting, database, and spreadsheet software or other SEIU Benefit Funds software, including Microsoft Office Suite, in the performance of record keeping and financial analysis.

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting. Long and extended hours required as necessary.
