Development Associate

Position Description:

Under the supervision of the Director of Global Corporate Development, provides support for the organization and database management of ASNC development efforts including: membership, corporate membership, program underwriting, Annual Dinner, special events and other fund raising activities.

Responsibilities Include:


• Day-to-day management of Raiser's Edge donor database including system development, data entry, reports, individual and group mailings, gift acknowledgments, donor research, etc.
• Development membership and fundraising campaigns for special events
• Manage membership upgrade, renewal, post-event, and new-join solicitations
• Ensure donor acknowledgements and membership renewal notices are sent promptly and accurately
• Review and improve membership benefits; solicit additional business partners for membership benefits

Development Analysis & Support

• Design, generate and present reports, charts, and spreadsheets relative to fund raising tracking and management on a monthly basis
• Serve as liaison for board and development meetings
• Schedule solicitation appointments for development staff in collaboration with ASNC senior management
• Work with Development Director, Program Director and Executive Director to clarify and strengthen development goals and strategy for ASNC
• Assist Development Director in targeting corporate support
• Communicate with current and past corporate donors
• Draft fundraising correspondence (letters, invitations, solicitations, proposals, reports, acknowledgements, etc) on a timely basis
• Assist in recruitment, management of interns
• Prospect and identify sources, including corporate, foundation and individuals
• Keep track of invoices, benefit recap letters, and acknowledgement letters for sponsorship and membership

Special Events

• Assist in planning all donor-appreciation & fundraising events
• Manage and represent Asia Society at special events and programs
• Manage Annual Dinner silent auction solicitation & organization
• Manage Annual Dinner raffle prize solicitation
• Manage intern projects related to Annual Dinner including press/PR, volunteer recruitment, event logistics, sponsor tracking, communications and décor
• Assist in soliciting outside venues for special events
Internal and External Communications/Marketing
• Develop promotional, social-networking and other outreach materials in collaboration with a Social Media Intern to members and donors, including blog posts, twitter/facebook updates, letters, emails, holiday cards, and other materials
• Manage and design quarterly newsletter to constituents
• Manage contact with commercial printers and/or design conference advertisements and programs; ensure marketing language is effective and design is attractive
• Coordinate mailing of invitations, newsletter and other office-related materials
• Serve as liaison between development and program functions of ASNC to ensure that program marketing is targeted, effective and timely
• Write or edit all press releases for special events and pursue press coverage
• Draft Constant Contact email blasts to constituents for development campaigns
• Act as primary press contact for Annual Dinner


• Assist with teaching weekly Mandarin class and other Mandarin language programs
• Build capacity of and participation in ASNC high school scholarship program
• Assist with development of regular YPG programs
• Attend programs to assist with event logistics & represent Asia Society
• Organize the Asian Corporate Briefing Series, ASNC’s forum for high-level CEO’s from Asia
• Track program sponsorship and underwriting

Additional Duties

• Represent Asia Society in the community
• Prepare documentation for meetings including staff meeting agenda items, assemble promotional packets, and take meeting minutes when needed
• Perform customer-service-related tasks such as answering public inquiries and answering phones
• Assist in building membership, outreach and development of Asia Society’s mission
• Deposit checks to the bank on weekly basis
• Order office supplies as needed
• Assist with the recruitment, training, and supervision of assigned interns and volunteers, including organizing and prioritizing assignments
• File donor materials
• With the Program Associate, assist in calendaring and making travel arrangements for the Executive Director and development team.
• Track website and IT maintenance
• Perform other related duties as assigned
• Assist in duties of program associate in his/her absence


- Prior experience in a nonprofit organization's development office
- Commitment to the Asia Society's mission
- Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years development work experience
- Exceptional interpersonal skills as well as oral and written communication skills
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Proven track record of successful proposals helpful
- Experience with Raisers Edge or other database software
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment where teamwork, collegiality and self-motivation are necessary for success
- Outstanding organizational skills, multi-tasking ability, ability to work under tight deadlines
- Outstanding editing and proofreading skills
- Familiarity with Asia and Asian American issues and the philanthropic community preferred
- Flexibility to work in the evenings and some weekends during peak periods (calendar and fiscal year ends)
