A full-time, non-residential position

The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) is hiring a full-time Online Communications Project Manager. OAEC is a non-profit educational and advocacy institute working in the areas of ecology, permaculture, watershed restoration, horticulture, the arts, and social justice activism ( OAEC is located on an 80-acre organic farm, retreat facility and intentional community, 65 miles north of San Francisco in western Sonoma County, California.

Job Summary

The Online Communications Project Manager will serve as an integral member of OAEC’s Program and Administrative Departments, helping to articulate our story through inspiring, user- friendly web-based media targeting a variety of program constituencies. She/he will serve as the project manager for the development and management of the new OAEC website, the design of our online communications strategy, and our social media presence. The Online Communications Project Manager would be expected to work 80% or more of their time at the OAEC office.

Primary Responsibilities:
1. Project management of a planning and design process to redesign OAEC’s main website
a. Develop design objectives, criteria and process for website redesign

b. Develop a timeline for project planning and realization

c. Develop website platform criteria, and decide whether to update or to replace
our current Drupal platform

d. Manage an update or replacement of the website platform for OAEC’s WATER
Institute ( – to match that of the main OAEC website

e. Develop information architecture flow to better convey a holistic narrative of
OAEC’s story and it’s component program work

f. Work collaboratively with all OAEC staff to clearly convey through our website
the organization’s historical and current program information

g. Hire and manage subcontractors as needed (i.e. programmer/developer, web
graphic designer, etc.)

h. After managing website redesign planning process, build site from platform on
up to completed website

2. Ongoing management of OAEC’s current website, and when completed, its
redesigned website
a. Manage routine maintenance and upgrades to website format and content
b. Actively collect updated program information from OAEC program staff and post online accordingly
c. Be responsive to routine requests by other OAEC staff to make edits and changes to their program pages on our main website
d. Manage directly, and/or work with occasional consultants, to maintain and upgrade our platform for both and websites

3. Co-manage OAEC’s overall outreach strategy: Insure unity in outreach design and narrative – online, email, brochures, press releases, tabling materials, etc. – for OAEC’s programs, campaigns, courses, plant sales, events, and other activities in collaboration with OAEC’s Administrative Director

4. Manage a planning and design process for how OAEC can strategically utilize social media
a. Develop objectives of OAEC use of social media
b. Develop criteria and protocol for posting and managing social media for
all of OAEC’s many programs and projects
c. Manage routine use of OAEC’s current and future social media

5. Manage routine OAEC e-newsletters

6. Work with the OAEC Communications Committee
a. The Online Communications Project Manager is responsible to the Communications Committee (which includes other OAEC program and administrative staff)
b. Convene and facilitate meetings of the Communications Committee

7. Other Responsibilities as an OAEC Staff Member
a. Attend and participate in weekly OAEC staff meetings
b. Attend and participate in the yearly OAEC planning process
c. Be available and flexible to support the organization’s overall success

Secondary Responsibilities (program funding-dependent):

Co-manage (with OAEC programs staff) development of program specific web-based media
a. Working with ArcGIS, KMS and other platforms to create and manage web-based interactive maps that showcase OAEC’s program work, for example:
i. Location, type, size and details of the ~225 California school gardens that OAEC’s School Garden Program has supported
ii. Mapping data points and project details of various on-site projects, including the demonstration and restoration projects of the Wildlands Program; the
WATER Institute and the Permaculture Program
iii. Working with our Movement Generation Justice and Ecology Project, help with a Bay Area wide “Canopy View” mapping project – to show boundaries and
relationships within the emerging regional food-sheds, water-sheds, energy-sheds and governance-sheds, etc
b. Work with our Documentation Coordinator and contracted videographers to commission, edit, select and upload photographs, videos and maps

• Extensive experience in project management
• Extensive experience in website development management
• Extensive experience with using social media platforms
• Extensive experience with Mac computers and associated software
• Excellent writing and copy editing skills
• Ability to distill and accurately convey OAEC’s history, message and programs through a newly designed website, and through social media
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to details, including tasks prioritization and meeting deadlines
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to assertively engage a large group of varied staff with very complex schedules
• Confidence to be self-directed, and the ability to work both independently and collectively
• Enthusiasm for OAEC’s mission and work to create just and sustainable communities
• Ecological literacy and fluency the program areas in which OAEC engages
• Experience with web-based mapping ArcGIS, KMS, etc. is a plus
• Experience with website programming is a plus
• Experience with graphic design is a plus

This is a full-time, non-residential position. Annual salary is $40,000. OAEC offers a generous vacation plan and a Cafeteria Plan with health care options, but does not offer paid health insurance. Staff can participate in OAEC courses and events free of charge, use the OAEC facilities (pond, hot tub, sauna, etc.), harvest garden produce, and eat meals at OAEC when working.
