Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT) is seeking an Experienced Community Organizer (2-3+ years of experience preferred) with a passion for justice and for supporting grassroots leaders in building a multi-cultural, multi-faith community organization capable of transforming our communities and schools. In Sacramento County, we are lifting up a new vision that unites people across race, class and religion. To this end, we are looking for applicants who have experience working with communities of color. This position would have a strong focus on developing leadership in the Latino community, so fluency in Spanish is required.
About Sacramento ACT: As a faith-based, grassroots community organization, ACT’s mission is to build the leadership capacity of ordinary people, empowering them to have a voice in the public arena. ACT’s grassroots volunteer leaders are strengthening public schools, improving healthcare access for low income people, improving neighborhood safety, ensuring more affordable housing and jobs, and advancing immigrant rights.
ACT is a federation of 40 congregations, schools and neighborhood groups representing approximately 35,000 families in Sacramento County. ACT is a member of the PICO (People Improving Communities through Organizing) National Network. With more than 1,000 member institutions, representing 1 million families in 150 cities and 17 states, PICO is one of the largest community-based efforts in the country.
The Position: (Experienced) Community Organizer
A community organizer with Sacramento ACT works with a variety of congregations, schools and/or neighborhood groups to: find and develop leaders; identify issues important to the local members; design campaign strategies and win policy changes that improve local neighborhoods and the quality of life for residents in Sacramento County.
Learning PICO's congregation-based model of community organizing and incorporating its principles into day-to-day work activities
Building relationships and leadership of members in at least 5 congregations and/or schools or neighborhood groups
Completing 20 one-on-one relational meetings every week with current and potential leaders of those communities.
Training and developing community leaders from these institutions to act in the public arena
Working with clergy and neighborhood leaders to support their institutions to act publicly on issues effecting their members
Working with other staff to provide leadership for ACT’s citywide campaigns for healthcare, education, and youth violence prevention.
Participating in PICO National Network initiatives and campaigns to move policy at the state and national levels
Participating in fundraising and administrative activities as required.
Full time, with significant evening and weekend work.
Skills and Qualifications:
BA/BS degree strongly preferred, or equivalent work experience.
Experience in organizing strongly preferred (at least 2-3 years).
Fluent in Spanish and experience working with the Latino community.
Strong public speaking, writing, and analytical skills.
Strong ability to understand public policy and develop a political issue campaign.
Strong interpersonal and relational skills and interest in people.
Disciplined, and able to work effectively in highly unstructured environment.
Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting a community.
Desire to learn and openness to challenge.
Strong interest in community and social justice issues. Experience in organizing preferred.
Ability to work in multi-faith, multi-racial/ethnic setting and with immigrant communities.
