The Accounting Manager is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the Global Fund for Women’s accounting function. S/he manages and performs accounting activity, including reviewing all general ledger transactions, preparing expense allocations, and managing the month-end closing process to ensure that financial reporting is accurate and timely. S/he supports org-wide finance projects, such as annual budget and audit preparation. The Accounting Manager is part of the Operations team at the Global Fund for Women. S/he reports to the Director of Finance and New York Operations and supervises the Staff Accountant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
General Ledger Management: The Accounting Manager oversees general ledger activities and ensures the accuracy of all general ledger accounts. Responsibilities include reviewing and approving allocations and transactions; reconciling accounts; maintaining schedules; performing cost allocations; and tracking and preparing preliminary releases of net assets from restriction. The Accounting Manager manages the month-end closing process.
Cash Management: The Accounting Manager monitors and maintains daily balances on cash accounts and ensures that the organization has the necessary funds to pay vendors, grantees, and staff. S/he reviews and approves the processing of weekly disbursement batches. On a monthly basis, s/he reconciles bank and investment accounts.
Budgeting and Reporting: The Accounting Manager ensures the integrity of cost allocations and helps staff with budgetary responsibility monitor their Board-approved budgets. S/he analyzes cost centers to provide information on cost impact. The Accounting Manager provides customized information reporting to staff members for financial analysis. S/he works closely with the Grants Coordinator to ensure accurate and timely reporting to the members of GFW’s fiscal sponsorship program. S/he prepares quarterly financial statements and creates tools to visually convey the data for staff and Board. The Accounting Manager supports the Director of Finance in the preparation of reports for financial analysis and for funders, and supports the annual budgeting process.
Payroll: The Accounting Manager oversees payroll for the organization. This includes approving the submission of payroll information to the third-party processor and reviewing payroll reports and tax filings for accuracy. S/he approves any out-of-cycle payroll checks (e.g. termination pay, wage garnishments, or bonuses). On a monthly basis, s/he prepares the payroll and paid leave reconciliations.
Audit and Tax Preparation: The Accounting Manager oversees the annual audit and the preparation of audit documentation. S/he is the primary liaison to field auditors in the preparation and review of GFW’s audited financial statements, and serves as the point person during the field audit. S/he prepares various tax filings including property and sales tax, and supports the auditor’s preparation of IRS Form 990.
Policies and Procedures: The Accounting Manager helps create, revise, and disseminate the organization’s accounting policies and assists the Director of Finance in monitoring and enforcing them. S/he conducts finance-related policies and procedures orientations with new staff and provides ongoing updates for staff. S/he implements and maintains GFW’s accounting system (e.g. QuickBooks).
Leadership and Supervision: The Accounting Manager supervises and develops the Staff Accountant. In collaboration with the sub-team, s/he helps create annual goals and priorities.
Miscellaneous: The Accounting Manager has additional miscellaneous finance responsibilities including, but not limited to: drafting and reviewing contracts, sponsorship, and proceeds agreements; managing GFW’s state registration filing; managing GFW’s insurance policies, and responding to ad hoc requests from other teams at the Global Fund for Women. Organizationally, s/he:

• Represents the Operations team in a positive way within the organization and in interactions with individuals and organizations external to the Global Fund for Women
The Accounting Manager is part of the Operations team at the Global Fund for Women. S/he works closely with staff in carrying out her/his responsibilities and represents the Operations team in a positive way within the organization and to the Board of Directors. S/he reports to the Director of Finance and New York Operations and supervises the Staff Accountant.
As a representative of the Global Fund for Women, the Accounting Manager interacts closely with representatives of various financial institutions, external auditors, vendors, donors, and grantees.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Full-cycle, non-profit accounting with financial reporting, reconciliation, G/L, A/P and A/R experience
• Project accounting/job costing experience
• Experience writing and administering relevant policies
• Proficient computer skills with software experience in MS Office, particularly Excel and Word, and Windows-based general ledger accounting systems, preferably QuickBooks
• Proven record of accuracy, efficiency, dependability, multitasking, and the ability to work independently, as well as being able to operate successfully in a cross-functional and cooperative environment
• Supervisory experience
• Commitment to promoting the Global Fund for Women’s mission and goals, including its commitment to diversity and to women’s human rights
Familiarity with FileMaker Pro is a plus. Enthusiasm, sense of humor, and grace under pressure is ideal.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• College degree
• At least 3 years experience with non-profit, general ledger accounting, reporting, and analysis, as well as use of Excel and other accounting applications
• Strong working knowledge of GAAP in non-profit environment
START DATE AND COMPENSATION
The projected start date for this position is January/February. The Accounting Manager position is full-time. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
