Peer Health Exchange (“PHE”), is a national non-profit organization that gives teenagers the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions. We do this by training college students to teach a comprehensive health curriculum in public high schools that lack health education. Since our founding in 2003, we have trained more than 5,000 college student volunteers to deliver effective health education to over 57,000 public high school students in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and the San Francisco Bay Area, and will be expanding to Washington, DC, in fall 2012. We recently launched our 2011-2015 Strategic Plan. The plan has three major priorities: deepening impact, investing in more robust program evaluation, and developing and testing additional methods for impact, all while serving 120,000 teens over the next four years. To achieve these priorities, we will grow from a staff of 40 and a budget of $9.5M today to a staff of over 100 and a budget of $14M in 2015.
PHE’s National Program Team oversees the development, revision and evaluation of PHE’s program model, as well as the high quality implementation of the PHE program in local sites across the country. Over the course of the 2011-2015 Strategic Plan, the National Program Team will also lead the development and evaluation of strategic “investments”—innovations aimed to improve the impact of our program model. The work of the National Program Team is concentrated in four areas: Volunteer Teaching and Learning, Teen Teaching and Learning, Volunteer and Alumni Development, and Organizational Learning and Support. The Teaching and Learning Manager will work closely with both the Volunteer Teaching and Learning and
Teen Teaching and Learning areas.
Volunteer Teaching and Learning Area
The Volunteer Teaching and Learning (VTL) area aims to increase our impact on teen learning and healthy behavior by fostering the highest quality teaching in every PHE volunteer. The primary responsibilities of the three staff members working in the VTL area are to oversee the development and implementation of volunteer recruitment, selection, training, assessment and coaching. Over the next three years, the VTL area will also lead strategic investments focused on volunteer teaching quality in order to deepen PHE’s impact on every teen we serve.
Teen Teaching and Learning Area
The Teen Teaching and Learning (TTL) area aims to impact teens’ healthy behavior outcomes by maximizing teen learning. The primary responsibilities of the five staff members working in the TTL area are to oversee the development and implementation of PHE’s ninth grade curriculum and high school partnerships within our current program model. Over the next three years, the TTL area will also lead strategic investments focused on improving our curriculum, pedagogy and collaboration with high schools and teens, in order to deepen PHE’s impact on every teen we serve.
The primary responsibilities of the Teaching and Learning Manager are to assist with the creation, revision and evaluation of Teaching and Learning strategic investments (both Volunteer and Teen), and to support development of the current PHE Program Model. The Teaching and Learning Manager will report directly to the Managing Director of Teaching and Learning. This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits package.
The Teaching and Learning Manager will:
•Take a leading role in Teaching and Learning strategic investments (both Volunteer and Teen) by:
o Overseeing and participating directly in the design, revision and evaluation of the investment pilots
oConducting external meetings with experts and PHE school partners to inform development of the investments
oTraining and managing local staff on the implementation of the investments in PHE sites
oVisiting PHE sites to monitor implementation
oGiving ongoing feedback to Local and National staff on their performance related to their work on the investment
•Play a supporting role in the development and continual improvement of the following components of the PHE Program Model related to Volunteer and Teen Teaching and Learning, including:
o Volunteer recruitment, selection, training, and coaching
oThe current PHE curriculum and workshop materials
oPHE Teen Health Resource Cards
oPartner High School staff management and training
•Support high quality program implementation, with a focus on Teaching and Learning, across all PHE sites by:
o Traveling to PHE sites as needed to provide in-person program training and support to local teams on PHE Program standards and, in particular, volunteer and teen teaching and learning standards
o Assisting with ongoing trainings to roll out components of the Program Model related to volunteer and teen teaching and learning, and ensure their high quality implementation
•Support the National Program Team by:
o Collaborating with staff members in the National Program Team’s other areas
o Attending bi-weekly National Program Team meetings
o Assisting the Managing Director of Teaching and Learning
Peer Health Exchange is looking for someone who:
•Has strong passion for PHE's mission to give teenagers the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy decisions
•Has a Bachelor’s degree
•Has a minimum of three years of K-12 teaching experience in low-income public schools
•Has at least one of the following two additional qualifications:
oExperience coaching new teachers and/or designing and implementing trainings for adult learners
oExperience in health education curriculum design
•Has played a leadership role (e.g. as a grade team leader) or managed teams on long-term projects
•Has exceptional writing and editing skills
•Has exceptional verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills (especially in the classroom/training context)
•Has excellent organizational skills and strong detail-orientation
•Has the ability to design systems to streamline tasks and increase productivity
•Can effectively communicate across teams and to various constituencies
•Has strong interpersonal skills
•Is efficient in managing diverse tasks, activities, and projects
•Exercises excellent judgment in decision-making
•Has command of all Microsoft Office programs, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
•Has a can-do attitude and feels comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
