Waldron has been retained by the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) to recruit a new Director and this may be just the professional challenge you are seeking. This is a highly visible position within the community and offers the right candidate a rare opportunity to lead dramatic community wide change and drive significant initiatives to impact the health and well being of the population.

With a staff of about 360 employees and budget of approximately $35 million, the Director has ultimate responsibility for all programmatic, supervisory, and administrative functions of the Public Health Department and reports to the nine-member Board of Health appointed by the County Executive.

The Director serves as the spokesperson for the Department and as a result must possess a strong professional presence, good judgment in times of crisis or uncertainty, persuasive public speaking skills, and high degrees of integrity and ethics.

The Director will either be a physician with a minimum of two years of supervisory or administrative experience in public health and licensed (or able to obtain a license) to practice medicine or osteopathy in Pennsylvania or, if not a physician, a person with at least four years of supervisory or administrative experience in public health supplemented by a master’s degree in public health, hospital administration, public administration, or a related discipline.

Candidates with experience leading successful reform efforts within a similar agency are highly desirable. In addition candidates with demonstrated analytical and assessment skills, experience with policy development in public health, expertise in population level health program planning and implementation, substantial leadership experience in a public health agency, department, or division of significant size, and the ability to work at a systems level will be given preference.
