The Junior Statesmen Foundation is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, political education organization that prepares high school students for responsible leadership in a democratic society. In over 500 high schools throughout the nation, Junior State of America (JSA) chapters serves as the center of political awareness and activity on campus. During the school year, The Junior Statesmen Foundation and the JSA hold 50 major regional and state-wide conventions on politics, current events, debate and leadership. During the summer, The Junior Statesmen Foundation conducts the Junior Statesmen Summer School on university campuses and sponsors Symposia on politics, government and current issues.
We are seeking an educational mentor and energetic leader to support the chapters, student leaders, teacher/advisors and programs of the JSA. In this essential role, you will support of the JSA program, work with student leaders to conduct educational conventions and conferences and aggressively expand the program by helping to start JSA clubs or “chapters” on high school campuses. Additional responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Set, achieve/exceed growth targets for chapters and convention attendance and recruitment goals for JSA members at summer programs from assigned area
• Identify schools/organizations to target for JSA/Summer Programs recruitment; develop and implement recruitment strategy
• Successfully maintain and cultivate relationships with parents, faculty, politicians and institutions as well as manage program budgets, staff and logistical arrangements
• Work with JSA leaders to conduct student-run political awareness and civic education programs of the highest educational quality
• Serve as an administrator at the residential summer programs of The Junior Statesmen Foundation
• Provide mentorship and guidance to elected and appointed JSA student officials; identify, recruit, motivate and inspire young leaders who show leadership potential
• Act as a resource for civic education and political involvement, know major political players, policies and politics, understand political institutions and utilize this knowledge to enhance educational value of programming
• Primary point of contact for chapter relations/communications with chapter presidents, teacher/advisors to help to build strong, active chapters
• Use and manage organization’s CRM to effectively communicate with constituents
• Identify opportunities to diversify JSA by recruiting students and/or building chapters to increase the participation of underrepresented groups
• Public relations for programs in assigned area by “telling the JSA story” on organization’s website and through traditional/new media channels
• Negotiate contracts with event venues and vendors, manage logistical arrangements for programs and activities, serve as liaison with hotel, university, school and other venue staff/vendors
• Manage event budgets including expense management and overseeing on-site registration
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in a business related field, Political Science a plus
• 2+ years of non-profit, education or public policy experience
• Knowledge of national, state, and local politics and ability to work collegially with dynamic student leaders
• Must have excellent relationship building abilities and enjoy working with high school students
• Skills with event planning, strong verbal and written communication/presentations and public speaking
• Self-motivated individual who can be a leader, organization builder and inspirational mentor
• Organized, attentive to details, excellent computer skills and strong proofreader
• Experience with Salesforce, social media and web/graphic design desirable
• Windows and Microsoft Office suite proficiency and strong organizational abilities
