POSITION TITLE: STAFF OMBUDSMAN
COMPENSATION: 35 HOURS PER WEEK
FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: DIRECTOR OF AOA PROGRAMS
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: CERTIFIED OMBUDSMAN VOLUNTEERS
ABOUT US: The Alliance on Aging (AoA) was created in 1970 to support the unmet needs of seniors living in Monterey County. Since that time, the AoA has evolved into an umbrella organization offering a wide variety of services and programs designed to meet the psycho-social, health, and economic needs of older persons living in Monterey County. Supported by a dedicated team of 20-plus staff and over 150 volunteers, the AoA is a dynamic, professional organization preparing for unprecedented growth in the senior population.
OBJECTIVE: Advocate for Monterey County residents of long term care (LTC) residents in skilled nursing homes and residential care facilities for the elderly, maintaining strict adherence to laws, regulations, and policies; and provide information to families on how to select an appropriate LTC facility.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receive, record and initiate complaints both in skilled nursing facilities and residential care facilities for the elderly with a focus on the Salinas Valley region
Ensure referral of the complaint to the appropriate licensing body, as appropriate
Document and maintain detailed records of client interactions, complaints and investigations
Review bi-weekly, active cases with Senior Ombudsman and AOA Program Director
Support certified Ombudsman Volunteers through individual consultations and group meetings
Attend monthly in-service training of Ombudsman Volunteers and staff
Attend Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings on a bi-monthly basis
Attend citation review conferences as an advocate for residents
Attend residential and family council meetings, as appropriate
Maintain positive working relationships with management and staff of long term care facilities
Maintain working relationships with other agencies concerned with the welfare and rights of long-term care residents
Compile monthly data on facility visits, complaints & investigations, volunteer service hours, LTC consults, and enter data into NORS database or other AOA report templates, according to report due date
Ensure the maintenance of confidentiality in accordance with Federal and State requirements
Co-plan and execute occasional volunteer recognition events
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus three years experience in a human services organization
CA Certified Ombudsman following successful completion of CA Ombudsman Training Program (36 hours) and internship – may be completed within first three months of hire
Experience working with and motivating volunteers
Valid California’s driver’s license auto insurance, and personal means of transportation
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS:
Knowledge of the elderly population and problems related to long-term care
Ability to maintain client confidentiality
Ability to maintain professional objectivity and boundaries
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
Demonstrated computer skills in MS Office environment
Self-confidence, self-direction and tact
Salary/wages commensurate with experience; benefits package includes health, dental, vision and life insurance; 403B retirement fund with employer contribution after one year; vacation, sick and holidays.
