Position Summary
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will support and advance United Way of Greater Atlanta’s mission of improving lives by overseeing all aspects of UWGA’s Resource Development strategies and initiatives. This will include creating new resource streams and planning, coordinating and executing successful initiatives, such as the Annual Workplace Campaign, Affinity Group programs, Planned Giving, Endowment, Major Gifts, and In-kind gifts. This position fosters a culture of philanthropy within the organization and assures that the culture, systems and procedures support fund development. The CDO will lead and direct Resource Development staff to maintain superior donor relationships and meet measurable revenue goals.

Responsibilities
LEADERSHIP

• Lead strategic development efforts for the organization to achieve annual fundraising revenue objectives. Brings progressive thinking, with understanding of philanthropic trends and best practices in donor-centered fund-raising
• Provide leadership and direction for the design and implementation of strategic and operational plans for enhancing major gift revenue and workplace campaign fundraising
• Designs and implements strategies for the identification, solicitation, cultivation, stewardship, and growth of major gift donors and gift amounts
• Expand the all facets of the donor base by creating development initiatives that further the organization’s mission and brand
• Generate excitement and energy around the organization’s mission and activities, encouraging others to provide financial support
• Helps board members, chief executive, resource development staff and other fundraising volunteers identify, cultivate and solicit charitable gifts
• Develop creative strategies for identifying and engaging diverse constituencies critical to the organization’s fundraising goals
• Assures proper planning including identification, strategy development, goal setting, and evaluation of results to support fund development
• Provide direction and support to strengthen UWGA’s position with its current donor base and in new emerging markets
• Informs the chief executive and volunteer leadership on the condition of the UWGA’s fund development program and on all important factors influencing it
• Ensures attainment of the organization’s fund development activities through the selection, development, motivation and evaluation of human resources, both professional and support staff
• Builds the skills, knowledge and abilities of the professional and support staff in the areas of workplace giving, major and principal gifts, events, donor relations, corporate partnerships, affinity groups partnerships, and stewardship
• Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with Community Engagement programmatic staff and staff across the organization
• Work as part of the President’s Cabinet senior management team and building effective, collaborative relationships to advance objectives and outcomes
• Recognize organizational-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment.
• Ensure that all resource development data is current, appropriate to goals and outcomes, and supports organizational needs
• Maintain a comprehension and appreciation of documented metrics and performance indicators used to measure progress in resource development. Exercise expertise in evaluating and realigning structure and process systems support needed to meet objectives
• Manage the department budget
• Represent the organization in speaking engagements at internal and external events as needed

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, or Business Administration
• 10 – 15 years of comprehensive fundraising experience (including major gifts, corporate, foundation and government relations) or sales/marketing background
• Experience in managing major gifts on behalf of educational, cultural or social service agency preferred
• Campaign experience, including planning, implementation and account management
• Experience in building, mentoring and motivating a team in a complex organization with demonstrated skill in developing strong teams and collaborations
