Over its 39 year history, the Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) (www.medasf.org) has advanced innovative approaches to promote economic justice through asset development for the Latino community in San Francisco. Its programs foster asset creation through group education and one on one counseling in financial capability, small business development, homeownership, income tax preparation and community planning.
MEDA is currently seeking candidates for the position of accountant to join our growing finance team. The accountant is responsible for recording, updating and evaluating the information presented in financial statements, narratives, and other accompanying schedules to the financial statements for any reporting entities assigned.
1. Reconcile bank accounts accurately and in a timely manner, with attention to unusual items that remain outstanding at month end.
2. Reconcile differences between A/P or A/R modules and G/L module.
3. Perform all month-end journal entries necessary to close the ledgers. Perform monthly account reconciliations in conjunction with the monthly close.
4. Prepare monthly financial statements within assigned time limit and accuracy standards.
5. Prepare relevant and current explanation of financial statements in a narrative format.
6. Prepare any financial statement related reports as assigned.
7. Prepare accounting reports required by outside agencies.
8. Respond promptly, courteously and, correctly to inquiries from internal and external users.
9. Assist in the preparation of budgets.
10. Review coding and/or prepare or correct coding of invoices within the weekly timeframe required. Work with regional staff on coding corrections.
11. Review coding and/or prepare or correct coding on all incoming deposits (checks and wires). Review coding for grant routing forms.
12. Review incoming grants and awards for federal applicability (A-133 reporting) and communicate to appropriate staff
13. Prepare all required schedules for the annual audit; obtain all required supporting documentation; answer all audit questions as able.
14. Identify errors and/or trends in accounting data and proactively initiate regular communication with management and appropriate program staff.
15. Track expenses by funding sources and expenses against approved organizational budget.
16. Track Net Assets Released from Restricted and Temporarily Restricted Net Assets.
17. Prepare cost reimbursement report to be submitted to federal or local government on monthly and quarterly basis.
18. Able to meet deadlines on short notice.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting required; CPA or CPA candidate preferred. Experience may partially substitute for education for accountants who are exceptional in other areas.
Minimum of three years of public or industry accounting. Education may partially substitute for experience for accountants who are otherwise exceptional.
- 2-3 years of experience in fund accounting principle or federal/local government grant management.
- A good understanding of shared/overhead cost allocation policy a plus.
- GAAP and government grant compliance knowledge are helpful.
