In this newly created position, the Development Director will build on the relationships and momentum that SVN has established over the past 25 years. The Development Director will focus on major gifts fund raising, seeking support for SVN’s Bridge Project from individuals and foundations. In addition the new Development Director will help launch SVN’s Legacy Fund – a board designated reserve and endowment. The first year goal is to raise $350,000 in operating/Bridge Project support and launch the Legacy Fund; the longer-range goal is to be raising $1 million annually within five years.
The Development Director will begin his/her work in early 2013, after SVN celebrates its 25th Anniversary at its Hall of Fame gala in New York City in November 2012. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director, the Development Committee and the Board of Directors in building support for SVN. SVN operates on a $1.3M annual budget, with a staff of 9 and a 12 member board. It is based at the Presidio in San Francisco and it is strongly preferred that the Development Director work out of this office. An entrepreneurial approach to major gifts fund raising and genuine commitment to SVN’s mission are essential for success.
1.Develop and execute a comprehensive plan for major gifts fund raising for operating, endowment & reserves. Work closely with the Executive Director and the Development Committee to develop strategies and tactics to rapidly and successfully expand the major donor program
2.Personally manage a portfolio of 75 to 100 donors and prospects. Meet individually with donors and prospective donors.
3.Effectively manage the Executive Director’s fund raising time and partner with her in cultivating and soliciting prospective donors. Prepare briefings and implement follow-up.
4.Develop and implement cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans, utilizing SVN’s conferences, programs and activities.
5.Train, coach and inspire the staff and board members and future fundraising volunteers in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors and prospects. Partner with board members in making solicitations. Prepare briefings, script meetings, strategize and implement follow-up.
6.Prepare written proposals.
7.Develop and launch the planned giving program, focusing on promoting bequests.
8.Conduct prospect research and generate prospect profiles.
9.Develop SVN’s online giving program.
10.Manage the development expense budget.
11.Ensure that SVN builds a development program with high standards for ethics and development systems and procedures.
12.Represent SVN to funders and to the public.
1.Five years demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising, or similar work.
2.Superior ability to develop and sustain positive relationships with donors.
3.Knowledge of relevant foundation funders throughout the country.
4.Ability to train and mentor staff and board members in effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship techniques.
5.Ability to work effectively with entrepreneurs, founders, impact investors and philanthropists.
6.Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
7.Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently and to manage multiple projects. Ability to follow-through on the details of fund raising is required.
8.Ability to work with wealth screening tools and to conduct high-level prospect research.
9.Knowledge of planned giving vehicles.
10.Results-oriented with a friendly, collaborative approach. Nimble and able to adapt to emerging opportunities.
11.Highly proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and in utilizing a development database
12.Knowledge of development principles, fundraising techniques and ethics.
13.Ability to travel throughout the country, attend meetings and conferences, and work evenings and weekends as needed.
14.Valid driver’s license.
15.Bachelor’s degree required.
16.Passion for SVN’s mission and ability to connect authentically and effectively with members, donors and prospects.
